Fastway Couriers is a courier franchise organisation with 25 Regional Franchisees operating delivery hubs around the country with over 700 Courier Franchisees moving in excess of twenty million parcels per year. With the introduction of the harmonised WH&S laws in 2012, Fastway recognised the need for a tool that could be used by franchisees around the country to assist them in complying with the WH&S laws, and that gave the franchisor visibility of hazards and incidents across the network.
The challenge faced by Fastway was to develop an enhanced safety culture, a consistent approach to WH&S compliance around the depots and access to the necessary information and reporting to allow the franchisor and franchisees to meet their due diligence obligations under the new laws.
Fastway took a two pronged approach to meeting these challenges. Firstly it engaged an external consultant to develop a series of guidelines to specifically assist Fastway franchisees to put systems and procedures in place to comply with the WH&S laws.
Secondly, the consultant, the franchisor and the Franchise Advisory Council (a representative group of franchisees) then worked with enableHR regarding the specific workflows and templates required to fit our business model.
This approach has allowed us to shape the enableHR system to meet the requirements of the franchisees’ business along with providing access to tailored guidelines, policies and procedures, the ability to record incidents and accidents, manage hazards and keep electronic records of all WH&S related issues in their business.
In addition, regular reporting can be obtained at the Fastway franchisor level, providing insights and evidence that due diligence has been exercised by the business when following the WH&S laws.
The enableHR system was launched at Fastway’s Regional Franchisee conference on the Gold Coast in August 2012 by Richard Breden, MD of enableHR, and is now in use by franchisees around the country.
